Arthur Caputi - Advisory Board

Art Caputi is one of the most highly regarded and well-respected members of the wine industry worldwide. Since the age of 15, he has grown up in the wine business with over 50 years of experience extending to senior management levels with E. & J. Gallo Winery, one of the world's largest wine businesses. Mr. Caputi is one of the world's leading wine industry experts on ethyl carbamate.

Mr. Caputi's peer recognition includes receiving the Merit Award from the American Society of Enology and Viticulture (ASEV), it's highest honor; and the Award of Merit of the Office International de la Vigne et du Vin (OIV), the Paris-based intergovernmental body that shapes international wine trade policies. He is a former President of the ASEV. He has headed numerous committees with industry organizations such as the Wine Institute, including chairing Wine Institute's Technical Committee and its Ethyl Carbamate Working Group. The Wine Institute is the public policy and advocacy association of California wineries - representing over 800 wineries and affiliated businesses, and operating in six regions of the U.S. and seven foreign countries. Mr. Caputi has also headed numerous subcommittees dealing with a large variety of state and federal regulatory agencies. He has been a member of the Industry Advisory Council for the Department of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California at Davis. He continues to be a highly active and sought-after enologist, scientist and advocate. He holds several patents; and has published over 40 scientific papers, including several on ethyl carbamate.

Mr. Caputi is an exceptional addition to the Functional Technologies Advisory Board given his vast technical knowledge and business experience, and his extensive contact base in the wine industry and the regulatory community. He has accepted this Advisory Board invitation with a personal interest to give something back to and to support the continued success of the wine industry that has provided so well for him.

 
John Campbell, CFA, MBA - Advisory Board

Possessing over 29 years of extensive experience in the investment industry, with significant expertise in mergers and acquisitions (M&A), Mr. Campbell is founder of and currently Chief Investment Officer (CIO) at Camlin Asset Management Ltd., a mid-sized, management-owned investment firm based in Vancouver, Canada. Camlin's investment approach focuses primarily on undervalued small- to mid-sized companies that provide strategic value to other firms in their sectors or industries, and as such represent potential acquisition targets. Prior to founding Camlin, Mr. Campbell co-founded investment banking firm CWC Capital. Previously, he was also an M&A specialist with The Jim Pattison Group, one of Canada's largest private corporations, as well as a portfolio manager and U.S. securities analyst with a regional brokerage firm.

 
Michael Liggett, CA, BSc. - Advisory Board

Mr. Liggett is a chartered accountant and seasoned pharmaceutical executive with considerable experience in executing strategic collaborations, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and financings. Recently, Mr. Liggett was the CFO of EACOM Timber Corporation, which acquired the Domtar Forest Product division for approximately $130 million and raised $145 million in equity financing to fund the acquisition. As the CFO of Inflazyme Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Mr. Liggett was instrumental in completing over $175 million in financings, acquisitions and strategic partnerships. Preceding his tenure at Inflazyme, Mr. Liggett held various senior positions at Price Waterhouse (now PriceWaterhouseCoopers) as an auditor and advisor. Prior to that, he practiced as a hospital pharmacist at Surrey Memorial Hospital.

 
Johann Tergesen, MBA, CA - Advisory Board

Mr. Tergesen is currently President and Chief Operating Officer of Burcon NutraScience Corporation. Burcon NutraScience is a research and development company building a portfolio of composition, application and process patents related to its plant protein extraction and purification technology. Burcon, in conjunction with Archer Daniels Midland, is currently focusing its efforts on developing the world's first commercial Canola proteins, Puratein® and Supertein™. Mr. Tergesen is one of the founding shareholders of Burcon NutraScience, and its predecessor Burcon Capital Corp. Prior to his role as president and COO of Burcon NutraScience, Mr. Tergesen was vice president and treasurer of Burcon Properties Limited, a real estate development and ownership company with assets in excess of $3.0 billion. Mr. Tergesen has been with the Burcon group of companies since December of 1995. Prior to that, he was a manager in the corporate finance group of the Vancouver office of Coopers & Lybrand, Chartered Accountants. Mr. Tergesen holds a BA in economics from the University of Winnipeg and an MBA from McGill University, and is a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Mr. Tergesen has successfully developed a world-class functional foods and nutrascience company that in many ways parallels the development path of Functional Technologies to date - whether as a publicly-listed company, developing and commercializing proprietary technology with compelling consumer health product applications, and/or nurturing relationships with or competing with global multinational food industry players. As such, his participation on Functional Technologies' advisory board will be all the more valuable as he brings his experience and success to bear on Functional Technologies' business and commercialization mandate for its proprietary yeasts and next generation biological health products.

 
Dick Wallingford - Advisory Board

Based in Napa, California, Dick Wallingford is an international wine industry sales and marketing veteran with proven experience in business development and with well-established relationships within the U.S. and U.K. wine industries. Mr. Wallingford relocated back to Napa from the U.K., where he operated his own successful wine import and distribution businesses. For many years, Dick worked at Beringer Wine Estates (now Foster's) in Napa in numerous senior sales, marketing and business development roles. Dick served as Vice President Exports and National accounts, in addition to serving as a member of Beringer's Executive Committee for 15 years.

 
The Wine Research Centre (WRC)

The Wine Research Centre at UBC was established in 1999. The WRC's mission is to conduct pioneering research in enology and viticulture and to develop highly qualified human resources with relevant scientific expertise and enterprise who will promote the technological advancement of the wine industry in Canada. This new initiative is based on a concept of collaboration with researchers at UBC, at other educational and research institutions, and all facets of the wine industry worldwide.

 
University-Industry Liaison Office (UILO)

The University-Industry Liaison Office's mandate includes facilitating the creation and development of UBC spin-off companies. Since 1984, UBC has been instrumental in creating 110 spin-off companies based on University research discoveries that have attracted more than $564 million in private investment. Of the 91 spin-off companies still in existence, at least 13 have been publicly listed, creating market capital value in excess of $6.3 billion.
